Computer-based Concussion Baseline
The numbers are staggering, and on the rise: 1.6 to 3.8 million sports related head injuries in the U.S. last year alone. And we are only beginning to understand the long term effects of concussion – especially multiple concussions – on the developing brain.
At New England Institute for Neurology and Headache our comprehensive concussion program incorporates a team of experts including neurologists, psychologists and therapists to accurately and quickly diagnosis concussion, educate parents and student athletes, and facilitate a customized treatment plan that addresses your individual needs. We then follow you closely and prepare you for both return to school, and return to play.
Neuropsychological testing is essential to understanding the extent of brain dysfunction. We’ve looked very closely into which computer-based concussion test provides the most reliable data. We were unimpressed with the startlingly popular ImPACT Test, since we feel that it is too insensitive a tool to help us guide you in your recovery (yes, we’re nerdy, and don’t take hype or marketing into our evaluation…we’re rather keen on science here).
CNS-Vital Signs is our computer based concussion tool. You can learn more about it here It’s got lots of science behind it, without the hype. CNS-Vital Signs is nerdy like us, and we like that.
Having your student athlete baseline tested (that is, before a concussion) helps us accurately gauge the degree of brain damage after the head injury, allowing us to better design a custom management strategy. Call or email to have your son or daughter tested. It’s a quick, easy and (dare we say) fascinating peak into your child’s brain function, and allows us to have solid baseline data in the all-too-likely event of a concussion down the road.
